S^hen asked to write the dedication I didn't
know where to begin. I know Mrs.McGurl for her
dedication to her family, job, school, and students.
It isn't uncommon for her to work until 5:00, rush
home to make dinner, and then return to school
for other commitments. Mrs. McGtnTs dedication
to her family and work is impressive but it is her
dedication to the school and the students that
distinguishes her among her colleagues. Mrs,
McGurl not only is the advisor of the Key Club and
the Mentor group, but she also helps to plan
dialogue nights, supports the Gay/Straight Alli-
ance, and attends as many other club events and
sporting events that she possible can, and always
with a smile on her face, I might add.
It was during my Junior and Senior years that I
really got to know and spend time with Mrs.
McGurl, Her office is always open, whether you're
the most popular Senior or a new student. She
gives a lending ear if you have a problem, an open
heart to those in need, a place to hide when your
having a bad day, and always a filled candy jar
when you need a chocolate fix. Mrs, McGurl has
not only acted as a adult to talk to, but also she has
acted as a friend. She has assisted me in making
difficult decisions, given me help when 1 have had
too much to do and too little time, and shown me
support when life has been unfair. She has saluted
my successes, shared in my joys, been proud at a
job well done, and always has time for some fun or
for dinner and mud pie, Mrs, McGurl' s support,
compassion and friendship has been unforget-
table; on behalf of the Class of 1999 I want to say
thank you, we love you and no more pictures!

As we walk our separate ways, friends, we not only walk out of Rutland High School, but
also into a new and ever-changing millennium. The times ahead may prove challenging,
but always believe in yourself; then there are no limits to what you can achieve. As we
depart from Rutland High School, we can reflect on our various athletic, academic, musi-
cal, artistic, and humanitarian endeavors. Together we have laughed, cried, won, lost,
created and imagined: but most of all we have grown and supported each other over the
last four years. We have grown into people who appreciate accomplishments, acknowl-
edge our mistakes, and dream of the future. Never forget the many memories we have

Indoor Track
Cross- Country Skiing
There are approximately 40 people who participate in indoor track. Every afternoon bej
ning at 3:30 Coach Heffernan begins by giving the team a grueling warm-up. Next tlvy
into groups depending on their abilities. Some run long distance, others do hurdles, and
are sprinters Jumpers, and throwers. They have been to numerous meets and some people!
advance to states if they have qualifying times. From there, a selected few move on to New]
Englands. This is a promising team with a lot of talcnt.be sure to watch them in the future,!

GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER
The Girls Varisty Soccer team made history once again by finishing
their regular season with a "better than 500" record. Each player gave a 1 10% |
effort to finish their regular season, 7 -6 - 1. One of their more memorable
wins, was the 6-0 shut-out against cross-town rival MSJ. Despite a tough
schedule, the girls , coached by Mike Kinsler, kicked their way lo a winning
season. The future looks bright for RHS girTs soccer with an increasing
interest in the sport and new talent entering into the high school level.

The boy's Varsity Soccer team, lead by captains
Collin Fingon and Matt McKane, claimed their first
winning season in three years, with a regular season
record of 7-6-1 . They lost their first round playoff game
to Essex which wrapped up their season. Good luck to
the returning players next year.

just a lot of running. It is. There is not
only a strive for individual goals, but
the team bonds together to beat the
competition. Leadership by the senior
runners will be missed, yet others will

INTRAMURAL SPORTS
Each year Mr. Robtoy spends his free time during X Block to give students who are not
members of a team sport to participate in intramural sports. He offers volleyball and basket-
ball to those students who wish to play and have fun.

The Varsity Boy's Basketball team has had one c

games to play, but they now stand at 15-3 and the

ICE HOCKEY
From the very first practice, it was obvious that this Raider team was going to be very good.
With one senior from the 1995 State Championship team, three valuable seniors, a multitude of
juniors, sophomores, and one freshman, Rutland again looked to be one of the top teams in Divi-
sion Two. Beginning with the first game of the season, Rutland looked very strong. In their first
outing of the season, Rutland crushed Brattleboro 9-2. In the next game they were not as fortu-
nate, losing to Stowe in overtime 4-3, In the next four games, Rutland won two and lost two. Bi
beginning with a win over Northfield 7-3, Rutland began an eight game winning streak.
Middlebury ended that streak, edging Rutland 4-3. Rutland finished off their season strongly by
shutting out North Country 5-0, In the quarter final game Rutland faced Colchester, and
Rutland had a great season, finishing 15-7.

On February 10 the National Honor Society put on
the Senior Celebrity Auction. NHS asked seniors to
volunteer themselves to be auctioned off and the
proceeds would go to charity, the Battered Women's
Shelter. Seniors were bid on ranging from $1.00 to
$65.00. The highest bidder was escorted by their
senior on Friday, February 12. The bidder received
a Valentine's Day card and candy. They were also
greeted and walked to each class by their senior.
Although the auction was very entertaining, the
involvement and money raised was outstanding!!!
Thanks to all the seniors and bidders for the
excellent outcomes and the time and the money.

As the school year winds down, the native inhabitants
of Rutland High migrate south. The most popular
places to visit include Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach,
Florida, and Cape Cod. It's only natural for the stu-
dents to relax and do some pretty strange things. Here

Rutland Historical Society and the Rutland Free Library.
Community Service
Many students at Rutland High School take time out from their school work and
personal life to contribute to our community. From working in the public schools, to the
hospital, the students have touched many lives. Students from Mrs. Smith's Community
Service Learning class learned all about helping other people. The students involved in ft
class take personal time to go to their sites and do their service. The sites the students
worked at included: the Recreation Department, Rutland Regional Medical Center, Eden
Park, Genesis Elder Care, Northeast School, Rutland Town School, and Rutland
Intermmediate School. Besides the Community Service Learning class, the RHS Key Qui
also contributes heavily to the community. The organization is committed to helping the
community. Also, each sports season, athletes go door-to-door to pick up canned goods fo
the local Community Cupboard.

The Mountaineers consists of a group
students who have a committment to the
environment and an awareness of all
living things. The group of 30 students,,
with their advisor, Mr. Rosenberg, take
hikes along the Long Trail or go ice
climbing. The group encourages clean!

Student Council
The Student Council, run by Mrs, Ravenna, involves twenty- four
students who are elected by their peers. The Student Council tries
to promote school and community involvement. This year, the
members helped organize Spririi Week and the pep rally/ bonfire.
The major goal for these students is to conduct class competi-
tions, deal with complaints concerning student problems, and to
promote school spirit and entertainment. Student Council meets
on Tuesday evenings at 7:15 for about an hour. Bake sales,
dances, and coffee houses are held to help fund raise for this
organization.

Mentors
The Key Club at RHS is a service orga-
nization sponsored by the Kiwanis com-
munity. The club has about sixty mem-
bers. They meet every Wednesday at
7:00 p.m. The past year they have been
in charge of many activities including
the Valentine's Day dance, wheelchair
square dancing and the Bardwell House
Christmas party. They also make yearly
contributions to KPT1, other commu-
nity charities, and the local food shelf.

National Honor Society
Allison you're supposed lo relax, not fall asleep
Sit back, relax, and listen to poems and other works., li

Mr* French, the advisor, leads the way in a reading for the
others.
The poetry club meets at 2:30 on even
Wednesdays and Thursdays, for anyone with
an interest in poetry, literature, reading and/
or writing. The major goals of this club is to
provide each other with constructive
feedback, organizing readings, and
hopefully, publishing a literary magazine.
A normal meeting begins with a discussion
of immediate and long-term goals, then there
is a sharing of recent written works and
published favorites.
The stutk us light their candles, raise their hands, and pledge
as they h time National Honor Society Memhers.
The National Honor Society, run by Mrs. Chase, is
forthos students who attain a 3.00 GPA or higher.
The cluh usually recieves around 25 students every
year. The students must show service, character, and
leadership ability. The major goals of the club are to
give ser ices to school and community. Meetings are
mandatory and are held every other Wednesday at
1:45pm mi Science Room 6. The president schedules
special meetings due to projects or important speakers.
This yea; the NHS held a picnic and a special dinner
for RHS Exchange Students to make them feel wel-
comed.

student body. Students write articles,
take pictures, ask questions, and design

advisor based upon commitment to the

project are raised through selling
advertising space to parents and
different buisnesses around
thecommunity These funds not only aid
in publishing the book, but also keep the
cost of the yearbook inexpensive enough

G.M.T.I and...
Students accepted into GMT! must be good leaders, want
to have a positive impact on the community, and strive to
inform about and prevent substance abuse. The group
provides many substance- free alternatives for the school
and community- We also run programs such as mediation
and Big Friend/ Little Friend which reach out to the youth
o( Rutland. The group has about 60 members as well as a
new Freshmen group. Every year we hold the annual
carnival, run Freshmen Orientation and assist with the
Prevention Convention.

V.T.L.S.P.
VXL.S.P,, or Vermont Teen Leadership and Safety
Program, is a slate wide program whose goal is to
promote a safe, healthy, and drug free life-style.
Although the Rutland V.T.L.S.P. Program is only in its
second year they are already involved on the school. staN
and national level.
VXL.S.P. meets one to two times a week at 1:45 in
Red 29 to discuss issues, plan events, report on assigned
duties and prepare for their next activity. Students
involved in this program participate in many statewide
activities throughout the school year. Some of these
activities include attending the Governor's Youth Lead-
ership Conference, attending Youth Advisory Counei
meetings, implementing the Save Our Seniors program
(S.O.S.), and testifying before the legislature on
prominent teen related issues. These members also have
worked hard to plan the Dialogue Nights, promoted
guest speakers, helped during pervention convention,
promoted cross peer-teaching activities, and fundraising
to attend the National Student Safety Program.

School's Drama Club. Every year
they produce about three plays.
Encore has been part of the Interna
tional Thespian Society since 199S
They participate in the Vermont
Youth Playwrighting Festival as I
well as the Vermont Drama Council
and the Vermont Youth Drama
Council. As part of the VT
Playwright ing program, students
write, perform in. and direct, ten
minute plays.

Cohtmhina were the fall produc-
tions. These two plays are Comedia
delT Ana. I in Man comedy, pieces.
The Spring perfomance for 1999
was Anton Chekov's The Boor, a
one act farce. The students working
on this play attended a Regional
One- Act festval in Milton, VT.

the production. Who's Wooing
Who. The group traveled to Long
Island to perform this piece us part
of the Yankee Thespian Festival.
Encore also hosted the 1999
Vermont State Theatre Festival.

freshmen were put in a separate class by themselves, not
because the band room was not constructed to hold such a
large group as the combined band, but also to let them 0*
adjusted to the high school music department. At the
begining of the year the names were simply Freshmen Band
and Upperclassmen Band, but those names were not suffi.
cfeftt They were later changed to Concert Band, formerly ^
Freshman Band, and Symphonic Band which uas formerly
the Upperclassmen Band, There was also another change
within the instrumental side of the Fine Arts Department
Another concert was added in the fall in additioi m the thi^
annual concerts. The band also performs at special appear-
ances and ceromonies, such as Memorial Day, Veieran'sD^
and many parades.

Marching Band
A Few weeks before the 98-99 school year Mr. Whitman conducted
the 1 si annual band camp. Many attended and this week seemed to
be a positive precursor of the fiiture spirit among the band. The
numbers were well balanced between the current freshmen class
and the veterans of the band. Everyone was taught how to march
as a group without any individuals sticking out. One major thing
which was expected to have been known before the camp was
started was the difference between left and right. We soon learned
that a refresher was needed in that urea as comands were called
out and people were faced in every way. Following behind us
faithfully w r ere our three Hag girls. They practiced on their own
time and ihen joined us at our practices. Events which the
marching band attended were the annual UMASS Band Day ai the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst, all of the home football
games, and the annual Rutland vs. MSJ game.
